Features of Infection
Identifying features of infection is one of the most important jobs of the surgical pathologist in the setting of acute lung injury. If a biopsy has no granulomas, neutrophils, necrosis, or viral cytopathic effect, infection becomes much less likely (and therefore steroids/immune supporession may be then best treatment option).
