6 Patterns > Nodules
Nodules
You have selected the nodules pattern!
Patients with nodules are usually sampled by needle core biopsy or surgical wedge resection. If you are facing a needle core biopsy, it must explain a mass lesions. The imaging studies show masses, nodules, or consolidation. If you still think you have a nodule pattern biopsy, click the link below.
If you're still unsure if you're dealing with a fibrosis pattern, explore other histologic features below.
Needle Core Biopsy
This biopsy procedure is ALWAYS for a nodule and therefore your specimen must explain a mass lesion. If it does not, the clinician should be informed.
Wedge Resection
Mass lesions may be wedged out and may be multiple.
If your biopsy has the above features, you are in the appropriate category of nodules. But your job is not complete by recognizing nodules.
Sample Signout
If no additional specific histologic features are identified, consider the following approach to signing the case out:
Nodular aggregates of _______ (see comment).
Comment: The biopsy shows nodular aggregates of _______ (choose one form the above). The differential diagnosis includes ________(from above). Correlation with imaging studies, serology, microbiology studies, and clinical history is suggested.
